Blog Post #16-Morgan Rushlow- final reflection/exam

Part 1- Text statement

After looking back at blog post 1-Blog Post 1-If I Built A School, What Would It Be Like?, I believe that I can imagine myself using in my future classroom  all technology available- especially Apple macbooks and iPads. I can also see my future students using PDAs. I can see myself in my future classroom using any assistive technology available, such as the mountbatten braille writer.I can see myself in my future classroom using any technology that has ever been or will ever appear in the future. I will constantly keep up-to-date with all technology and continue learning about all technology as long as i live. Why use all available technology? Because I believe doing this will benefit all students including those with disabilities. I can imagine myself in my future classroom as a student-centered teacher who uses and emphasizes PBL and team-based learning. I can imagine myself in my future classroom letting my students use all technology they have available, letting them choose an option for each assignment that works for them and their parents. I will also let them learn about any technology available to them. I can see myself in my future classroom emphasizing these methods- group work and collaboration, creativity and resourcefulness(using all skills and tools to do what needs to be done and figuring out how to do it yourself-and teaching the students this as well.), and life-long learning. These are the skills I will emphasize and employ in the teaching process. I can imagine myself in my future classroom being a teacher who teaches her students to be well-rounded and always be creative and question everything they already know. What will my future classroom be like? I plan on teaching any subject in grades 7-12 when I graduate from college and i can imagine it being a relaxed environment where all students feel it is safe to learn and to express themselves as individuals. I can imagine my future classroom being one where there is no limit to what can be learned or technology available to use. How would I change my blog post 1 if I could go back and change it? Probably simply add some things to it because there are so many more things i could say after completing EDM 310. What I said still stands, but now I have so much more that i could say. Also, I would look back to check for any errors in spelling/grammar, etc, because editing and proofreading are important skills to have.

Blog Post 15- Braque Group Collaborative Post-What assistive technologies are available to you as a teacher? Select a few and discuss how they may be useful to you.

Morgan Rushlow video responses- iPad videos
I viewed the videos about iPad usage and how it can help students with disabilities learn because it has features that help the deaf and blind to navigate the apps and do the tasks they intend to do. It has not only a speaking feature for the blind but a voice-command for the deaf and blind so they know exactly what they are doing and going to- however, i find that while the iPad is great because of these features it is best if someone is there helping the person navigate the iPad, because they may navigate to the wrong app or type the wrong thing. The features the iPad has will be good for use in teaching students with disabilities of any kind as well as those who are not disabled in any way. the iPad is a device that is versatile and can perform so many functions, although it is important to know how to use it best and to make sure that the users of these devices get the help they need in using it. I found some information about iPads on the web and found some pretty interesting things- such as  this website states-http://www.edweek.org/dd/articles/2011/10/19/01speced.h05.html, iPads are helping students all across the board in their learning because it is helping with not only hearing and sight impaired students, but it is helping those who are having a hard time with communication skills such as those with autism as well. iPads are indeed having a major impact on learning outcomes and they have a very important role in the future of education, as apple states in its’ very own statement about its’ own creation, the iPad-http://www.apple.com/education/ipad/. iPad makes it possible to do so many things now that were not possible even 10 years ago when iPad was not even a thought in Apple’s mind, that it is an understatement to say that it is going to be transformative, as this website states-http://www.concordmonitor.com/news/8040411-95/ipads-bring-students-with-disabilities-new-ways-to-participate-excel-in-education, iPad lets you express yourself in a variety of ways and this is why students can learn communication skills better with it because there are so many ways for students to participate in class and so many different apps that creatively express yourself it is mind-blowing. Clearly mind-blowing is an understatement in terms of what the iPad can do and will do for not only learning but for everything. iPad is a truly amazing piece of technology and it is worth it for schools to try to see how it improves student learning outcomes. iPad is truly revolutionary. Sure iPad has its issues and is best used with a helper if needed, its’ benefits outweigh the problems with it.As a collaborative secondary education major I plan to use iPad in my future classroom for these reasons-because it can do so much and can inspire creativity in ALL students.

Samantha West video responses-
I am blessed to have all of my senses that I was suppose to have. As a student I know that a class can be difficult enough even for me. I do not know where I would be if I could not see or hear. I know that it is not only hard on the student, but it is hard on the teacher as well. It is a good thing we have more and more technology to help out these students and teachers understand and perform better. Braille books are very helpful for blind students. If you can read Braille. Also, most schools are going all digital. What do those students do then? How about if each student has an Ipad, a student who is legally blind might have one that will read the book to them. If we were listening to a book in class on day, a student who had hearing impairments could follow along on his Ipad. There are many ways our students can learn, and most of them have the drive to. On a website I found, they spoke about a student Karen, she was legally blind and they went through her day. She would sit in history class, and listen to the teacher speak about the American Civil War, as she took notes on her personal digital assistant (PDA). She then went to her English class where they were talking about the story To Kill a Mockingbird. Karen had downloaded an electronic copy on her PDA. That way she could read it with her braille. She also switched back and forth between the story, and taking notes. Later she went to the library with her partner for a project, and used the computer there. In the library there is a computer that whatever page she is on it will read it out to her. This makes things simpler for the librarian. She can stay busy doing her work while Karen gets done what ever she needs. Karen is a star student, and is at the top of her class. Karen was taught at a young age to use her resources wisely. There will come a time as a teacher that I might have to teach someone with a disability, and I will be ready for whatever it throws my way because you just have to remember the student is just as excited about learning as you should be to teach them. I got this information from www.afg.com.

The Mountbatten braillewriter is something that I would definitely use in my classroom if the student had practice using it. There will be a lot of note taking of many things in my classroom so through the braillewriters ability to give audio feedback, the blind student will be able to participate more often in my classroom debates, projects, and even lectures.

If I were going to be a math teacher, there is no doubt that I would use Art Karshmer’s invention. He discusses how teaching math to the blind is difficult because all braille is linear and a lot of math problems require numbers to be stacked atop one another. Thus, he created a 3D grid that uses blocks with braille numbers on them. This way the bling student is able to work math problems like the rest of the class.

Project #12- Smartboard Part B- lesson delivery via smartboard- Braque Group- Morgan Rushlow, Daniel LoVette and Samantha West

C4T # 4

Hi,  this time I had the wonderful pleasure of commenting on the blog of the famous Marc Prensky- the man who wrote the textbook: Teaching Digital Natives- Partnering for real learning! Here are the comments I left on his blog- http://conversations.cemp.ac.uk/?tag=heppell

comment 1- Hi, my name is Morgan Rushlow and i’m a student in EDM 310 at the university of South Alabama. I think these things you discussed in your video here were great suggestions about helping students to be brave but I believe there are many ways to help students be brave and take risks with their learning which may include being wrong, such as letting them think about some questions at home. I think giving them time to figure out their own answers to questions by researching and thinking about it at home would help them because they will develop not only their critical thinking skills but building their ability to find out more about topics they want to learn about. They will learn to use the tools around them. This will help them develop more skills than just one.I believe that when teachers reward students for what they learn after making a mistake if they can show what they learned, can help them to be brave and no longer worry if they are wrong.

this comment was an answer to the question- how do we help students be brave to be wrong and ask questions. here is that post-http://conversations.cemp.ac.uk/?p=35. i gave examples of things i believe will help students to be brave and not afraid to be wrong and ask questions. I also stated why i thought prensky’s suggestions would work.

comment 2-Hi, My name is Morgan Rushlow and I’m a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama. I agree that technology will change everything about learning-from what is used in classrooms to the way students study- technology is certainly bringing a revolution in education. here’s a link to my EDM 310 student blog- http://rushlowmorganedm310.blogspot.com

Hi, Eric. My name is Morgan Rushlow and I am a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama. I think this is a story I think you definitely could write more on and make into a novel, eventually. I think that is good you wrote "to be continued” , because I think it should be. There seems to be a lot to the story that needs to be written, like how did “Stewie” escaped from the basement and what happens after that. I am interested in reading the next part of this story. Very interesting. Have a wonderful day! here is a link to my EDM 310 student blog-

Hi, Chloe. My name is Morgan Rushlow and I am a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama. I really enjoyed reading your post. I think you are a really talented artist. You are really creative, and it seems to me like you have a great passion for artwork.Your drawings in this video here are so lifelike and simply amazing. I think it is wonderful that you will be using your artwork for helping those in need. Have a wonderful day! Here is a link to my EDM 310 student blog-  http://rushlowmorganedm310.blogspot.com

Morgan’s Final Progress Report on PLN

Here’s how my PLN/PLE is going- I am really enjoying using symbaloo, delicious, twitter and google plus to form a learning network and connect with experts i can learn from. I find these are all helpful tools in learning and I would highly recommend anyone use them to form a PLN. I have learned so much from using these tools and had so much fun using them.

Blog Post # 14- What did I leave out?

For this post Dr. Strange asks us to give suggestions for the course EDM 310. I really have enjoyed this course and see this course as a valuable experience I will never, ever forget. I love the fact that we in EDM have been learning about PBL and hands-on education by experiencing it here in EDM 310. This course-EDM 310 has helped me develop more of my educational philosophy and has made me think more about what I would want my future classroom to be like.  I would have to say that the only thing I could see to change the course would be: adding would be a post where students talk more about their personal educational philosophies and the kind of teacher they want to be and what methods they plan to use. Also, I believe it would be beneficial to include posts about the importance of the arts such as music, theatre and dance.

I think all of this would be beneficial.

P.S.-Thank you, Dr. Strange, for a wonderful experience in EDM 310. I have really enjoyed it!!
